La Grande’s long sought after Quiet Zone is now one step closer. The public works department has begun construction at the Fir Street railroad crossing. When that one is done, next up will be Cherry Street then Willow Street, East H Avenue and Greenwood Street. At each crossing, the crews are building a curve that runs down the middle of the street with candlestick cones at the top to keep traffic in their lanes and prevent drivers from trying to go around the gates. The new devices improve safety at railroad crossings, and do away with the need for train whistles.
