On Monday, February 4th, 2019 at 3:51pm, City of La Grande detectives arrested 31-year-old Sondra Dean, of Eureka, California on a Humboldt County arrest warrant for Child Abduction 2 (felony).
On February 4th, 2019 at 2pm the La Grande Police Department dispatch center received the newly released arrest warrant for Dean. The arrest warrant also stated that Dean abducted two of her children and that the two children were reported as missing by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives from the La Grande Police Department then coordinated an immediate investigation in partnership with the Department of Human Services – Child Welfare Division after receiving information that Dean and the missing children were possibly in the La Grande area. During the investigation, detectives learned that Dean abducted two of her children from their father, who is the children’s legal guardian. Detectives also learned that Dean suffers from unstable behaviors and has a history of drug abuse.
At 3:51pm, La Grande Police Department detectives and patrol officers contacted Dean who was staying at the Royal Motor Inn. Dean was immediately arrested and taken into custody without incident. Dean’s three daughters aged, 4, 6 & 8 were in the room with Dean when she was contacted. The three children appeared to be in good health, but had very little necessities with them. Dean did not have any transportation and lacked sufficient resources to take care of the children. Dean had legal guardianship of the third child who was not listed as a missing child, but has not had physical custody of the child for the last 3 years. All three children were turned over to Child Welfare and a safety plan was made for the children. The missing children’s father and grandmother were immediately contacted and both were relieved that the children had been located and are now safe.
