The Eastern Oregon football team has been selected No. 7 in the 2017 NAIA Football Coaches Top-25 Preseason Poll.
The Mountaineers are coming off a historic season, which featured a program-record 10 wins and a trip to the semifinals of the NAIA Championships. They were ranked No. 4 in both the 2016 postseason poll and the 2017 spring poll.
Three other Frontier Conference teams were ranked in the top-25, led by Montana Tech at No. 6. EOU received 292 points in the poll, just five behind Montana Tech’s 297. Montana Western (19) and Southern Oregon (25) were also ranked in the poll, while Carroll was among those receiving votes.
After winning the national title in 2016, Saint Francis was picked as the favorite heading into 2017. The Cougars captured all 16 first-place votes.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences. The Top 25 is determined by a points system based on how each voter ranks the best teams. A team receives 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 for second-place and so on through the list.
The Mountaineers will begin the season at No. 25 ranked Southern Oregon on Aug. 31 in Ashland, Ore. EOU then hosts its home opener against No. 19 ranked Montana Western on Sept. 9.
