The La Grande Police Department is reaching out to the deaf community to help bridge the initial communications gap with them if they are ever contacted by the police.
The La Grande Police Department in partnership with the Oregon Association of the Deaf and the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training are now providing laminated visor and wallet cards to serve as a tool between individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and law enforcement officers.
Starting Thursday, May 3rd, 2018, anyone with a hearing limitation can stop by the La Grande Police Department to pick up two wallet cards and a visor card to display on their vehicle. Right now the La Grande Police Department has 10 of these cards available, but they can order more to have on hand if needed.
These cards will help ensure effective communication in situations when someone who is hard of hearing is in need of assistance or contacted by the police as part of a traffic stop or an investigation.
