A mild winter is allowing Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative to get an earlier start on its tree trimming activities.
In La Grande, contracted crews have already started tree trimming on the east and west sides of town. Tree trimming is also going on in Island City, as well.
Crews are currently working on the west side of Baker City.
In the John Day area, crews are working on the north side of town. OTEC plans for tree trimming crews to start work in Hines later this spring after completing work in John Day. Tentative plans call for tree trimming to begin in Long Creek and Seneca sometime this summer and in Burns later this fall.
OTEC only removes trees that pose a serious threat to safety and electric service. Trees that grow too close to power lines can cause outages, start fires or create other hazardous conditions. Not only does this work help maintain electric safety and service reliability, it is required by state and federal regulations.
